Piazza Prampolini

Known locally as Piazza Grande, Piazza Prampolini is the historic, civic and religious heart of Reggio Emilia.
Named after Camillo Prampolini, a prominent local politician and socialist, it has long been the city's main gathering place for festivals, public events and the traditional weekly market held every Tuesday and Friday.

As you stroll across the square, you'll be surrounded by some of Reggio Emilia's most iconic landmarks. Overlooking the square are the Town Hall, the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Notaries' Palace, the Podestà Palace with its Clock Tower, and the historic Bordello Tower, together creating one of the most picturesque views in the city's historic centre.

At the centre of the square stands the striking Crostolo Fountain.
The statue at its top personifies the Crostolo, Reggio Emilia's historic stream, and originally formed part of the decorative ensemble of the former Ducal Palace of Rivalta.

Inside the Town Hall, you'll also find the renowned Tricolour Hall, where the Italian flag was adopted in 1797, along with the Tricolour Museum.

From Piazza Prampolini, you can easily reach Piazza San Prospero by walking through the charming Vicolo Broletto, a vaulted passageway opened in 1488.
Look up as you pass beneath the archway and you'll still see the historic Latin inscription, "Stat regensium fides nulla sub aevo interora", celebrating the enduring loyalty of the people of Reggio Emilia through the centuries.
