Clock tower of Palazzo del Monte di Pietà

Among the city's most fascinating historical symbols, the Torre dell'Orologio (Clock Tower) of the Palazzo del Monte di Pietà stands out. Built in 1216, it has been a central part of city life for over eight centuries. Standing 47 meters tall, the bell tower dominates the historic center and, through its bells, tells the story of ancient traditions and collective memories.

Housed inside the tower are three bells, cast using the historic Reggio technique of the “nota a salto” (skipping note), an artisan method that imparts a unique and solemn sound. The two smaller bells, crafted by the master founder Jacobus de Regio, both bear the Este coat of arms, a sign of the deep connection to the territory's noble history. The smallest bell features a refined effigy of Saint Prosperus Enthroned, the city’s patron saint. The largest bell, known as the “Forcarola”, has a particularly evocative past: its tolling once announced capital executions, accompanying the final moments of those condemned to the gallows. Today, its sound remains a powerful testament to the past, moving and inspiring reflection in everyone who visits this extraordinary monument.
