Spergola: the white grape variety of the Reggio Emilia hills
Spergola is an ancient white grape variety from the hills around Reggio Emilia, which has been deeply rooted in the Scandiano and Terre di Canossa areas for centuries.
First mentioned as far back as the 15th century, it is now one of the most authentic symbols of Emilian winemaking and a key variety in the Colli di Scandiano e Canossa DOC appellation.
Its documented origins date back to the 15th century.
Over the centuries, it has been known by various names – including Pomoria, Pellegrina, Spergolina and Spargolina – reflecting its widespread cultivation and strong ties to the Scandiano area.
Long confused with other varieties, recent ampelographic studies have confirmed its genetic uniqueness, restoring its full recognition within the region’s wine heritage.
Its grapes produce versatile wines with great character: still, semi-sparkling (in dry, semi-dry and sweet styles), sparkling and passito wines. In all its forms, it stands out for its freshness, balance and elegance.
The dry wine is suitable throughout a meal and pairs easily with starters, first courses, fish, filled pasta, cured meats and Parmigiano Reggiano.
The sweet version, on the other hand, accompanies traditional pastries, such as baked cakes, biscuits and zuppa inglese. There is also the tradition of enjoying it at the end of a meal, with a ciambella dipped in the wine.
In the glass, it has a pale straw-yellow colour, accompanied by delicate aromas of white flowers and green apple. On the palate, it is fresh, harmonious and persistent. The characteristic ‘winged’ bunches help to make its varietal profile unmistakable.
Rediscovered and promoted in recent decades, Spergola is now proudly preserved by the wineries of the Scandiano hills.
Thanks to the commitment of local producers and the Compagnia della Spergola, it has once again taken centre stage in the region, contributing to the growth of wine tourism in the Reggio Emilia hills.
