Amidst the rolling hills stretching from Scandiano to the Terre di Canossa lies one of the most representative wine appellations in the Reggio Emilia region: the Colli di Scandiano e Canossa DOC.

This appellation encompasses a rich and varied wine-growing heritage, reflecting a territory particularly well-suited to vine cultivation.
From native grape varieties to international ones, the DOC encompasses numerous types of wine, including Bianco Classico, Spergola, Malvasia, Chardonnay, Sauvignon, Marzemino, Lambrusco Grasparossa and Cabernet Sauvignon, each offering a distinct interpretation of the character of Reggio Emilia’s hills.

The production area extends across much of the hilly region of the province of Reggio Emilia, encompassing the territories of Albinea, Scandiano, Canossa, Quattro Castella, Bibbiano, Montecchio Emilia, San Polo d’Enza, Vezzano sul Crostolo, Viano, Castellarano and Casalgrande, as well as parts of other neighbouring municipalities.
At the historic heart of the appellation lies the ‘Classica’ zone, where some of the region’s most distinctive white wines have been produced for centuries.

White wines are characterised by their freshness, fragrance and pleasant drinkability.
Whether dry, semi-sparkling or sparkling, they make excellent aperitifs and elegantly accompany starters, delicate first courses, fish and light dishes.
The semi-sweet and sweet varieties, on the other hand, pair naturally with traditional local desserts, from the Reggio Emilia ciambella to rice cake and spongata.

Red wines, too, fully express the character of the region: the dry varieties pair well with savoury first courses, meats and mature cheeses, whilst the semi-sweet versions go beautifully with baked pastries.

The history of these wines stretches back centuries.
As early as the fifteenth century, Scandiano wine was prized for its freshness and liveliness.
In the nineteenth century, scholars and agronomists documented its quality and commercial reach far beyond local borders, extending to foreign markets.
The fame of Scandiano’s wines continued to grow thanks to the work of the Società Enologica Scandianese, which promoted awareness of them in Italy and abroad by participating in major international exhibitions in the second half of the nineteenth century.

Now, this tradition is preserved and promoted by the producers and the Consorzio di Tutela, who continue to tell the story of the history, landscape and identity of the Reggio Emilia hills through every bottle.
