Re Welcome: Green
not to be missed
Hiking trails and excursions
Three thematic trails cross the province of Reggio Emilia: the Spallanzani Path (125 km) retraces the places visited and described by the famous Scandiano-born scientist of 1700. The Dukedoms Path (160 km) crosses the ancient ducal borders, that until 1848 divided villages and valleys close to each other, and winds through the Enza Valley through the Lagastrello pass. The Via Matildica del Volto Santo (about 285 km) retraces the places of the Grand Countess Matilda of Canossa from Mantua to Lucca, passing through Reggio Emilia.
Reggio Emilia by bicycle
Reggio Emilia is the most cyclable town in Italy, with a network of over 190 km of cycle paths. You can rent a bicycle and set off to discover the province of Reggio Emilia by following the itineraries that you find in our in-depth analysis. Many routes suitable for everyone!
Matilda's Castles
Outside the town, southwards, extends the territory that belonged in the Middle Ages to the Grand Countess Matilda of Canossa. Its possessions were guarded by castles, fortresses and towers, of which the Reggio Emilia area preserves many examples, to which are added villages and contemporary parish churches. Bismantova Rock and Reggio Emilia Apennines
The Bismantova Rock, a sacred and almost magic mountain, looks like a huge rocky rock on top of which extends a wide 12-hectare grassy plain. It is one of the most famous and appreciated symbols of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park. Everywhere from the ridge you can see its unmistakable shape, celebrated by travellers and poets like Dante, and is a destination for climbings, excursions and pilgrimages.
