Hiking trails and excursions

Reggio is the greenest city in all of Italy! Wander around on more than 160 km of trails that cover all the municipality and beyond: Reggio Città dei Sentieri (Reggio City of Trails) is the project that covers all these paths in a unique slow discovery of every corner of our territory.
Four long trails cross the province of Reggio Emilia: the Spallanzani Trail (125 km) retraces the places visited and described by the famous Scandiano-born scientist of 1700; the San Pellegrino Trail, following ancient roads, makes you revive a secular tradition that brings you from Reggio Emilia to the San Pellegrino Sanctuary on the highest peaks of the Apennines; the Sentiero dei Ducati (Dukedoms Trail) (160 km) crosses the ancient ducal borders that until 1848 divided the Dukedom of Modena-Reggio from Parma-Piacenza, and stretches along the Enza Valley and through the Lagastrello pass; and the Via Matildica del Volto Santo (about 285 km) from Mantua to Lucca, this trail stretches all along the Reggio Emilia Province from North to South, retracing the places of the Grand Countess Matilda of Tuscany.

Matilda's Castles

Outside the town, southwards, extends the territory that belonged in the Middle Ages to the Grand Countess Matilda of Canossa. Its possessions were guarded by castles, fortresses and towers, of which the Reggio Emilia area preserves many examples, to which are added villages and contemporary  parish churches. pietra bismantova

Bismantova Rock and Reggio Emilia Apennines

The Bismantova Rock, a sacred and almost magic mountain, looks like a huge rocky rock on top of which extends a wide 12-hectare grassy plain. It is one of the most famous and appreciated symbols of the Tuscan-Emilian Apennines National Park. Everywhere from the ridge you can see its unmistakable shape, celebrated by travellers and poets like Dante, and is a destination for climbings, excursions and pilgrimages.
