Broletto

Between Piazza Prampolini and Piazza San Prospero lies one of the most distinctive corners of Reggio Emilia’s historic centre: the Broletto, a charming passageway where history, architecture and everyday life come together.
Originally used as the Cathedral’s cemetery and later transformed into the canons’ garden, today the Broletto is a lively and atmospheric walkway, with shops, cafés and architectural details that tell the story of centuries of city life.

Above the archway, the Latin motto can still be seen:

"Stat regensium fides nulla sub aevo interora"
(The loyalty of the people of Reggio endures and shall never perish in any age),

an inscription that celebrates the strong bond between the city and its historical identity.

A Journey Through Art and City Life

As you walk through the mostly covered Broletto passageway, you will discover a variety of shops, historic workshops, cafés and the ancient canons’ loggia.
The passage also offers a charming view of the southern side of Reggio Emilia Cathedral, accessible through a 16th-century portal decorated with two Romanesque lion sculptures supporting columns, now beautifully weathered by the passage of time.
Adding further charm to this historic setting are the 16th-century vaulted ceiling decorations, featuring depictions of the Madonna della Ghiara and the Madonna degli Angeli.
