Housed inside the Basilica della Beata Vergine della Ghiara, in the heart of Reggio Emilia's historic centre, Guercino's Crucifixion is one of the city's most important works of art.
Painted between 1624 and 1625 for the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, the altarpiece depicts Christ on the Cross alongside the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Prosper, the city's patron saint.
Created shortly after Guercino's return from Rome, it is regarded as one of the artist's finest early masterpieces, celebrated for its dramatic composition, expressive power and masterful use of light.
When the painting was delivered, the city honoured Guercino not only with the agreed payment but also with a gold necklace bearing a medal of Our Lady of Ghiara, in recognition of the extraordinary quality of his work.
