The Great Cloister of Ghiara was built in 1715 to expand the convent complex of the Servants of Mary, the religious community that has looked after the famous Basilica of the Blessed Virgin of Ghiara for centuries.

The cloister, with its elegant 18th-century architecture, is one of the city’s most fascinating spaces, where spirituality, art and history intertwine in a harmonious dialogue.
The first floor now houses the Youth Hostel, which restores the site’s ancient vocation for hospitality and gathering, offering travellers a unique experience in the heart of the historic centre.

The nearby Small Cloister houses the Museum and Treasury of the Basilica della Ghiara, which preserves precious liturgical vestments, reliquaries and works of sacred art: testimonies to the deep bond between faith, devotion and beauty that characterises the history of the sanctuary.

To round off the tour, at the end of Via Guasco, there is an exhibition dedicated to basketball legend Kobe Bryant, who spent part of his youth in Reggio Emilia.

On the nearby Palazzetto dello Sport, the mural ‘The Black Mamba’, created by artists Domenico Di Lucia and Pietro Anceschi, celebrates with intensity and affection the memory of the great athlete, a symbol of talent and determination.
