A thousand-year history blending rolling hills and feudal power

Nestled in the hillside landscape just outside Reggio Emilia, Albinea Castle is one of the area’s most fascinating fortified complexes, with origins dating back to before 1070.
Its birth is linked to the powerful Fogliani family, key players in local medieval history, who established it as an important strategic and residential outpost.

In 1070, the castle appeared among the Bishop's possessions and was extensively renovated by Guglielmo Fogliani, Bishop of Reggio, who transformed it into a private residence.
The reconstruction work on the living quarters and defensive structures is commemorated by a famous 1277 epigraph, which remains fundamental today for reconstructing the complex's history.

During the 14th century, a period marked by violent power struggles, the castle temporarily fell under the control of the Municipality of Reggio Emilia (1324–1335), before being ceded by Bernabò Visconti to Francesco Manfredi.
Recaptured by the Fogliani family after a bloody battle, the fortress remained in their possession until 1368, when Emperor Charles V officially invested the Manfredi family with the castle and its appurtenances.

In 1451, following complex inheritance divisions, Giovanni Manfredi became lord of the castle and the progenitor of the Counts of Albinea.
After further property fragmentations and subsequent reunifications, the Manfredi family maintained control of the complex until the death of their last descendant in 1732.

Five years later, the Duke of Modena, Francesco III d’Este, granted the castle and the county to his minister, Alessandro Frosini.
As the last feudal lords of the complex, the Frosini family progressively transformed the castle into an elegant stately residence, surrounded by a picturesque pine forest that still enhances the imposing walls today.
Between 1811 and 1814, at the initiative of the Marquise Frosini, the entrance keep was rebuilt, embellished with Ghibelline merlons and a still-functioning drawbridge.

Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, the castle passed through various private owners.
In 1931, it was purchased by Carasco Manuel Y Reis de Granada, the Spanish consul to the Quirinal, who enriched the inner courtyard with a polychrome Moorish-style ceramic basin decorated with an Este coat of arms.

Today, Albinea Castle is owned by the Maramotti family.
Closed to the public, the complex holds remarkable historical and architectural value.
It features a U-shaped main building with a portico on the rear side, flanked to the west by a tower with machicolations, arrow slits, and covered battlements.
Standing at the southern corners of the enclosure are two cylindrical towers - one belonging to the Manfredi and one to the Fogliani - the last remaining testaments to the 16th-century ramparts.
An oratory dedicated to Saint Aloysius completes the complex, further enriching its historical charm.
