Borzano Castle

Matildic history blending ruins, nature, and archaeology

Borzano Castle, of which only evocative ruins remain today, once stood atop an imposing gypsum hill. Its dominant and strategic position made it a fundamental landmark within the Matildic defensive system. Although time has reduced the castle to ruins, the site retains a profound charm, capable of telling centuries of history immersed in nature.

Located within the ancient fortified walls is a small church dedicated to Saint John, a precious testament to the religious life that once animated the castle and its territory. Today, the site stands as an important historical and scenic point of interest, ideal for those who love exploring places rich in memory and quiet beauty.

A short distance from the castle lies the Tana della Mussina, a natural cave of great archaeological value. Finds of extraordinary importance have been unearthed here, documenting human presence in this area from Prehistory to more recent eras, making Borzano a key location for understanding the territory's origins.

In July 2008, a permanent archaeological-educational exhibition was inaugurated at the Borzano Environmental Education Center (via Guido Chierici 2). Enhanced by explanatory panels and display cases showcasing the recovered materials, the exhibition takes visitors on a fascinating journey through time, from Prehistory to the Renaissance. The exhibition can be visited by appointment, subject to prior telephone arrangement with the Municipality.

The same facility houses the Albinea Archaeological Group, which has been active for over ten years in numerous excavation campaigns near Borzano Castle. This ongoing research and promotion continue to contribute to the protection and knowledge of one of the area's most evocative sites.
