Historical notes

Mentioned for the first time in a document from Nonantola dated 883, it was later recognized for the Bishops of Reggio Emilia by Holy Roman Emperor Otto I in a document from 962.
From 1414 onward the castle, with its court and surrounding lands, followed the fortunes of Scandiano.
It is one of the few remaining examples on our territory of a plains fortress, built atop an earthen embankment constructed after the excavation of an elliptical moat.
In the well-preserved internal courtyard stands the Oratory of St. Rocco, built in 1570 by the Marquis of Thiene.
Of particular note in the interior of the castle is the monumental staircase constructed by the Marquis De Mari in 1750.
A public section of the castle, recently restored, was inaugurated on June 3, 2000.
The current restoration has aimed to bring the rediscovered material in the public spaces back to a state of clear legibility and to the pleasures of the senses, using neutral backgrounds to emphasize the original fragments.
Particular attention has been paid to the restoration of the floors: artisanal terra cotta tiles with similar shape and texture to the originals, or from the same time period, have been used.
