Via Vittorio Tognoli

42019 Scandiano

The most important artworks here include the war memorial commemorating the partisans who died in World War II, designed by the internationally-renown artist Bruno Munari. As suggested by the title of the work – “Insiemediversi è meglio” (“togetherdifferent is better”) – the monument expresses and combines the concepts of liberty, tolerance, solidarity, and democracy. Bruno Munari’s work formally synthesises the rebirth of these ideas which the partisan war of resistance contributed to strengthening. The elements of difference (represented by the various wind-gauges that turn in different directions) are joined to the same object, the metal pole, but interact with it in different ways. Despite their diversity, they share the same course, i.e. the direction shown by the “arrow/rudder” balanced at the top of the pole. The pole, a metal trunk narrowing at the top, symbolically springs from a circular platform carved with the faces of the partisans from Scandiano who died in the Liberation struggle.
