Historical notes

The square is dedicated to Camillo Prampolini, famous politician and socialist of Reggio Emilia. It is also known as "Piazza Grande" (Big square) and it's the heart of the town centre, place of the main manifestations of Reggio Emilia and seat if the week market (Tuesday and Friday).
On the squre some of the most important buildings of the town centre face: the Town Hall Palace, the Bordello tower, the Cathedral, the Baptistery, the Notarie Palace and the Podestà palace with its clock tower. This last building divides Piazza Prampolini from Piazza del Monte and, originally, it was linked to the near palace by the Portico of the Pescheria (Fish shop).
On the square, in front of the palace, there is the Crostolo Fountain: the statue standing on the top, represents the local torrent Crostolo and was part of the somptuous architectural decoration of the Ducal Palace of Rivalta.
Piazza Prampolini is linked to Piazza San Prospero by Vicolo Broletto, a vaulted passage created in 1488 with the opening of the wall of the former Garden of the canons.
Above the entrance arcade on Piazza Prampolini there is the inscription of the XVIII Century in latin: "Stat regensium fides nulla sub aevo interora". (The fidelity of the Reggio Emilia citizens resists and it will never die).
