Historical notes
The original core of the collection was created by Gaetano Chierici and then enlarged by Naborre Campanini. Historian Ugo Bellocchi (who recreated the model of the first flag, based on documents, in 1966) first had the idea of a Museum dedicated to the Tricolour Flag. Between 1985 and 1987 the Collection had its first seat in some rooms adjacent to the Tricolour Hall, but only with the celebration on the Bicentenary of the Birth of the Tricolour, in 1997, there was the real impulse to create a Museum and a new display.
January 7, 2004 the President of the Italian Republic Carlo Azeglio Ciampi inaugurated the first section of the Museum dedicated to the Napoleonic period. The second section was opened in 2006 and hosts original documents and relics related to the historical events of italian Risorgimento up to 1897, year of the celebration of the first Centennial of the Birth of the Tricolour Flag.
A new section of the Museum was inaugurated by President of the Italian Republic Sergio Mattarella January 7, 2017, on the occasion of the 220th anniversary of the birth of the Tricolour Flag. The new entrance to the Museum in Piazza Casotti is dedicated to the contemporary art and hosts, beside new workshops, the important Group of artworks part of the project "Ninety artists for a flag", created by Deanna Veroni to support the Mum and Baby Hospital and then donated to the City of Reggio Emlia by the Storchi family. These artworks are inspired by the flags displayed in the streets of the town centre in 2011, on the occasion of the 150 years from the Unification of Italy and reproduced the different shapes that the flag assumed during its history.
The new exhibition itinerary starts in the spaces on the ground floor, named Tricolour Inspiration, where the Museum of the Tricolour Flag meets the contemporary art and the creativity, with the permanent exhibition and workshops.
On the first floor, the Tricolour Flag section tells the history of the political events in Reggio Emilia from 1776 to the beginning of the Restauration. The exhibition continues in two parallel itineraries: the history of the national flag and the history of the political events in Reggio Emilia and their interaction with the national history.
On the second floor, in the Italia Tricolore section, are displayed documents and relics, dating from the Restauration to 1897.
The exhibition ends with the visit to the Tricolour Flag Hall, next to Palazzo Casotti, where January 7, 1797 the first Tricolour Flag was born.
