The Correggio Scarpasot is a savoury pie that was awarded DeCo (municipal designation of origin) status in 2012.
It differs from the Erbazzone from Reggio Emilia in that it does not contain any pastry (puff or shortcrust), which makes it even more delicious.
Inhabited since Roman and Lombard times, Correggio boasts a fascinating history spanning centuries of art, power and culture.
From the 11th century onwards, it was a fiefdom of the Da Correggio family, who took their name from these very lands and who, between the 14th and 15th centuries, were able to compete with great dynasties such as the Visconti and the Este, even going so far as to rule Parma for a brief period.
In 1452, Correggio was granted the title of county, before being elevated to a city in 1599 and finally to a principality in 1616.
The court of Correggio became one of the liveliest cultural centres of the Po Valley, frequented by poets and intellectuals as Ludovico Ariosto, Pietro Bembo and Pietro Aretino.
It reached its peak of splendour between the 15th and 16th centuries with extraordinary figures such as Nicolò da Correggio, the refined poetess Veronica Gambara and the Renaissance genius Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio.
In 1630, with the fall of Prince Siro, the fiefdom came under the control of the Duchy of Modena, sharing its fortunes until the modern era.
It was the filming location for Radiofreccia (1998) and Made in Italy (2018) by Luciano Ligabue.
Correggio is also the birthplace of some of the greatest figures in Italian art, music, sport and culture: from painter Antonio Allegri to composer Bonifazio Asioli, from sculptor Carmela Adani to the legendary marathon runner Dorando Pietri, then writer Pier Vittorio Tondelli, flautist Andrea Griminelli and the rock musician Luciano Ligabue.
