Piazza del Monte
Now officially named Piazza Cesare Battisti, but still known to locals as Piazza del Monte, this elegant oval-shaped square lies in the heart of Reggio Emilia's historic centre, along the route of the ancient Via Emilia.

A Heritage of Great Historical Value
The square’s most iconic building is Palazzo del Monte, also known over the centuries as Palazzo del Podestà, which separates Piazza del Monte from Piazza Prampolini.
Its name reflects the various institutional roles the building has served throughout history, bearing witness to the square’s central role in the civic life of the city.
The square is also home to the historic Hotel Posta, one of Reggio Emilia’s most prestigious hotels.
The complex consists of two adjoining buildings, restored in the 1920s and featuring two distinct architectural styles: the building facing Piazza Prampolini showcases neo-Renaissance elements, while the Palazzo del Capitano del Popolo, overlooking Piazza del Monte, was restored to reflect its 13th-century appearance based on discoveries made during the restoration works.
On the first floor, the Sala del Capitano del Popolo preserves a collection of valuable original frescoes, offering a fascinating glimpse into the building’s historic past.
Completing the square’s architectural ensemble on its northern side is the 17th-century Palazzo Bussetti, recently restored and now home to a shopping gallery.
Traditionally attributed to Lorenzo Bernini, the building houses elegant stucco decorations and 17th-century paintings, offering further evidence of the remarkable artistic richness of Reggio Emilia’s historic centre.
