In Reggio Emilia stands a unique monument in Italy dedicated to the “Maestrine d’Italia”, the young women teachers who, from the second half of the 19th century onwards, brought education and the Italian language to even the most remote areas of the country.
With courage and dedication, these teachers played a key role in the fight against illiteracy and in promoting the cultural and social development of many communities, making education more accessible throughout Italy.
The bronze sculpture, created by internationally renowned artist Alessandro Romano (Rome, 1944), was made possible thanks to contributions from several Italian and foreign committees of the Società Dante Alighieri and from private citizens.
Romano’s artistic style combines classical inspiration with contemporary sensitivity, creating sculptures rich in symbolism and expressive power.
The monument celebrates the role of these guardians of knowledge and culture, highlighting the importance of education as a tool for personal growth and social progress.
