Memorial to the 39 Heysel Victims
A place of remembrance dedicated to the Heysel victims, promoting the values of respect and fair play in sport
In front of the Mirabello Stadium in Reggio Emilia stands the Memorial to the 39 Heysel Victims, a unique monument in Italy dedicated to the memory of those who lost their lives on 29 May 1985 during the European Cup final between Juventus and Liverpool at the Heysel Stadium in Brussels.
Created by Flemish sculptor Gido Vanlessen, the monument has become an important symbol against violence in sport and a powerful reminder of the values of respect, memory and fair play.
The sculpture evokes the image of stadium terraces scarred by tragedy, representing the devastating events of that night.
Among the 39 victims was Claudio Zavaroni, a citizen of Reggio Emilia, whose name was given to the stand of the Mirabello Stadium located in front of the memorial.
Initially loaned to the city and later purchased, the artwork was eventually donated to the Municipality of Reggio Emilia.
A protective covering was built to preserve the sculpture over time, funded by donations collected by the “Never Forget Heysel” Committee, which continues to maintain the memorial and organise an annual commemorative ceremony in honour of the victims.
