Founded around the year 1000 by the Da Correggio family, the Church of Saints Peter and Paul stood in the area known as ‘Alta’, where a medieval castle once stood.
Originally an ancient parish church within the Diocese of Parma, it has been the religious heart of the Campegino community for centuries.

An inventory from 1699 records the rebuilding of the church in 1677, in a simple yet harmonious style, with three naves: the side naves with flat ceilings and the central nave, which is higher, covered by elegant round arches.
The main façade, spacious and bright, is distinguished by its pilasters and the broken pediment surmounted by acroteria, which lend movement to the whole.

Damaged by the earthquake of 1832, the church was restored and extended: the choir was added, the façade was renovated in Renaissance style, and stucco statues of the patron saints Peter and Paul were placed in the side niches.
The new bell tower, erected in 1840, adds height to the complex’s silhouette and has become a landmark in the surrounding landscape.
Under the guidance of Don Matteo Romani (1843–1878), the church was enriched with marble altars, an organ and several oil paintings.
Among the works of art preserved here, a precious silver chalice from 1419 and exquisite 18th-century liturgical vestments stand out.
Severely damaged by the 1996 earthquake, the church underwent major restoration work that restored it to its full beauty, whilst preserving its value as a place of faith and remembrance.
