Location

The municipality of Scandiano is located on the Tresinaro stream, south-east of Reggio Emilia.

Historical notes

Scandiano is one of the most important social-economic towns in the area between the hillside and the plain.
One of the oldest places of human settlement in the province, it is full of archaeological, historical and artistic interest.
The famous “Venus” comes from the Neolithic village of Chiozza di Scandiano (found in 1940 and now kept inside the Museum Palace of Reggio Emilia).
The first castle in Scandiano was founded in 1262 by Gilberto Fogliani from the powerful family to which Guido Riccio, immortalized by the pen of Simone Martini in Siena, also belonged.
The Fogliani family was succeeded by the Este family, and after them, by the Boiardo family (1432), the most famous of which was the poet Matteo Maria.
After the death of the last of the Boiardo family, Hippolytus, in 1560 Scandiano passed to the Estense Ducal Hall: there were then several investitures such as the Thiene, the Bentivoglio and the Mari until the direct dominion of the Este family until the Risorgimento (except for the time of the Cispadana, Cisalpina Republic and the Regno Italico).

Scandiano is now a rich centre of economic, agricultural, commercial and industrial activities also due to its position at the foot of the hills and at the mouth of the Apennines valleys. The ceramic industry is particularly important.
There have been many famous people from Scandiano: Matteo Maria Boiardo (1441-1496), one of the greatest Italian poets, innovator (with his Orlando In Love) of Italian epic-chivalric poetry; Antonio Vallisneri (1661-1730), renowned scientist and disciple of Malpighi; Lazzaro Spallanzani (1711-1778), naturalist and physiologist, defined by Pasteur as "one of the greatest experimenters".

Reasons to visit

Scandiano conserves interesting traces of its noble past: the Boiardo Fortress of the Boiardo family, a magnificent Renaissance construction inside of which was an important cycle of frescoes by Nicolò dell'Abate (XVI century), now kept inside the Modena-based Art Gallery; still in piazza Boiardo, the Santa Maria Church contains the polychrome group of the Virgin Mary of the Rosary, dating back to the XVI century) and the tomb of Lazzaro Spallanzani; in Piazza Duca d’Aosta is the XVIII-century San Giuseppe Church which contains an interesting tabernacle of the Ceccati school and the remains of frescoes attributed to Nicolò dell'Abate.

The Clock Tower, the ancient entrance to the Fortress, and the birthplace of Lazzaro Spallanzani with a typical XVIII-century façade, are also worth seeing.

On the main square, surrounded by ancient porticoes, is a beautiful statue depicting Lazzaro Spallanzani, made by G. Fornaciari.

The architectural structure of the Boiardo Fortress, the most important building structure of the town, was the symbol of the political power of Scandiano for eight centuries. It contains Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque elements.

The architectural complex, which covers a surface area of 5,000 square metres, has been subject to many renovations over time. It was built, in fact, in 1315 as a defensive construction by the Da Fogliani family, then transformed into a noble residence by the Boiardo family (1423-1560), and finally, turned into a Renaissance palace by the Thiene Marquises (1565-1623) and the Este princes (1625-1726).
It is possible to find various architectural structures from different periods: Medieval (the postern tower of the north entrance and hanging arches in the courtyard), Renaissance (the courtyard gate) and Baroque (stairway, mullioned windows, lintel of the courtyard, plaster decorations in the Este family apartment).
Until the XVIII century the Fortress kept an important cycle of frescoes by the painter Nicolò dell'Abate, today kept inside the Modena-based Art Gallery. Many artists worked in the Fortress, including Bartolomeo Spani, Giovan Battista Aleotti and Antonio Traeri.

Historical notes

The construction of the overall complex was completed in 1632 thanks to Lavinia Pio of Savoy, Marchioness of Scandiano.
Leading up to the church, a long tree-lined stone path holds the fourteen Stations of the Cross (Via Crucis) comprising small shrines with bas-reliefs in polychromatic stuccowork.

The building has a simple tripartite facade, with central rose window above the portal and surmounted by a pediment. Inside the church, the right-hand wall holds an impressive large oil painting by the well-known Emilian painter Giuseppe Barnaba (Carpi 1710 – Reggio Emilia 1796), known as Fra Stefano da Carpi. The painting, which depicts the exaltation of saints of the Minor Franciscan Order, was commissioned in 1774 in view of the Beatification of Father Lorenzo da Brindisi. Stylistically, it is inspired by the perspective, light, and chromatic solutions of 18th century Venetian painting, in particular Tiepolo.
The chapel of the high altar holds an exquisite wooden tabernacle by Fra Fedele da Scandiano in the form of a temple standing on small columns which, in turn, form niches which hold effigies of the saints to whom the church is dedicated, St. Anthony and St. Francis.

The interior has three naves and eight bays. The church was designed by an architect from Ferrara commissioned by Feltrino Boiardo, the first Count of Scandiano, in the first half of the 15th century.
The façade, differently from the other sides of the church and the apse area, has monochromatic plasterwork and is divided vertically, reflecting the interior division into central nave and two aisles (with eight bays).
The bare brick walls of the chapels of the two aisles are recessed with respect to the façade.
The church holds a number of interesting works of art, including a painting of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria, patron saint of the town, a work by Bartolomeo Passerotti dated 1588; the Madonna delle Grazie on the altar of San Pietro, painted by Reggio Emilia artist Orazio Talami (1624-1708), and the painting of the Nativity by the French artist Jean Baptiste Le Bell (1740). The church also conserves fine wooden sculptures from the 16th, 17th, and 18th centuries, including the statuary group of the Madonna del Rosario (1654), the altar of the Holy Sacrament, and the Dead Christ. Also worthy of mention is the cenotaph by Reggio Emilia artist Francesco Tondelli (1808), which conserves the heart of Lazzaro Spallanzani. The vault of the church, in front of the high altar on the side of the Vangelo, probably conserves the remains of the poet Matteo Maria Boiardo and other members of his family.

The present facade was designed in 1776 by the architect Francesco Iori. The rectangular bell tower, dating to some years prior (1759) is attributed to the architect Bazani of Reggio Emilia. The church has a single nave, with the chapel of the high altar on axis with the façade. Above the altar, an exquisitely executed painting of the marriage of Joseph and Mary dates to 1759 and is attributed to Miselli. One can also admire two fine carving works in the chapel of the Crucifixion: a wooden tabernacle attributed to Cecati and the adornment of the organ by the sculptor Cocconcelli (1704). The latter is considered to be one of the finest Baroque style carvings in the province of Reggio Emilia.

The renovation works were probably carried out in the first half of the 18th century. In 1846 the body of the church up to the presbytery was erected. In the late 1800s-early 1900s the façade was moved to the east and the chancel to the west, widening and lengthening the church. The bell tower rises separately on the northern side and culminates in a chamber with two-light mullioned windows. A nineteenth-century shrine set on a pilaster is situated along the road leading to the parochial church.

Historical notes

The church erected on a hillside is dedicated to Saints Gervasio and Protasio, celebrated on 10th June.
The actual date of origin is uncertain; it is supposed that the first chapel was built next to the ancient fort to the south, which was destroyed in 1322. The facade with sloping roof culminates in a pediment and is decorated in the centre with a rose window. To the side, the brick bell tower with a chamber with two-light mullioned windows at the top was built in 1921 in place of the ancient bell tower on the southern side. The plan of the church, with east-west orientation, only slightly differs from the 17th century style, with a single nave marked by pilaster strips and without transept. Various remodelling and restoration works have been carried out over the centuries. Of particular interest are the works commissioned in 1876 by the parish priest Don Francesco Salvarani, in which the chancel in the apse zone was rebuilt and the wooden balustrade, still present, was added. The old chancel, which became the presbytery, now holds the high altar, recessed by over two metres with respect to its original position. The church also has two altars in the side chapels at the end of the nave, dedicated to Christ and to the Virgin.
