Historical notes

The Church, currently deconsecrated, is a typical example of "cultured" architecture. Built on a pre-existing oratory from 857, in 1549 it was dedicated to S. Agata and at the beginning of the XVII century it was dedicated to S. Carlo.
In 1662/74 the Confraternity of SS. Agata and Carlo promotes the restoration by the architect Girolamo Beltrami from a design by Bartolomeo Luigi Avanzini, author, among other things, of the Palazzo Ducale project in Modena. In 1826 it was the seat of the resurrected Confraternity of the Invention of S. Croce, called "of the Death". The refined Baroque, the niches with the statues depicting Prudence, Strength, Justice and Temperance, the decorative stuccoes, the balustrade that originally housed the organ, create a complex scenography that illusory dilates the space, based on an elliptical plan with the attached access portico.
On the external façade, two XVII-century marble tombstones commemorate Orazio Colombo and Sebastiano Camuncoli.
