The origins of San Polo d’Enza date back to ancient times: it is believed that the area was already inhabited in Etruscan times, as evidenced by the settlement of Servirola, just a few kilometres from the town centre.
The village was first mentioned in 980 AD as Plebs de Caviliano in a charter issued by Emperor Otto II, and in the following centuries it came under the rule of the Canossa, Visconti, Este and Gherardini families, highlighting its strategic importance between the lowlands and the hills.
