Marco Gerra
Marco Gerra (1925-2000) is one of the most significant figures in contemporary art associated with the region.
His city was not only the place of his origins, but also a constant point of reference for his artistic exploration and cultural legacy.
After studying in Modena and Bologna, Gerra returned to Reggio Emilia, where he produced the bulk of his work, becoming a leading figure in the local artistic avant-garde.
Here he came into contact with innovative intellectuals and artists, helping to renew the language of painting with works that were increasingly free, abstract and rich in rhythm and colour.
But it is above all in the city that his mark is still visible today.
Walking through Reggio Emilia, you can find his works in the Palazzo dei Musei (Museum Palace), which houses paintings that symbolize the evolution of his art, from figuration to the most geometric and experimental abstraction.
A place that symbolizes his connection with the city is Spazio Gerra, in the heart of the historic centre: a cultural and exhibition centre established thanks to a donation from his wife, designed specifically to keep the artist’s memory alive and promote contemporary creativity.
His presence is also a prominent feature of the urban landscape: a large abstract sculpture welcomes visitors entering the city along the Via Emilia, becoming a defining feature of Reggio Emilia’s contemporary landscape and a symbol of his artistic vision.
