The Secchia River Flood Expansion Basin Nature Reserve is located just north of the Via Emilia, between the provinces of Modena and Reggio Emilia.
The reserve protects a 260-hectare wetland created as part of a major hydraulic engineering project designed to mitigate flooding along the Secchia River, together with the strips of riparian woodland that extend along both sides of the river.
Established by the Emilia-Romagna Region in 1996, the reserve is managed by the Emilia Centrale Parks and Biodiversity Authority.
The reserve's headquarters are located in Rubiera, inside the sixteenth-century Corte Ospitale, which still retains many of its original architectural features.
