Among the cultural highlights that make Reggio Emilia a dynamic city open to innovation, the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza / Aterballetto occupies a prominent place.
Established in 2003 on the initiative of the Emilia-Romagna Region and the Municipality of Reggio Emilia, the Foundation carries on the legacy of the Aterballetto company, founded in 1977 and now recognised as one of the most important organisations in Italian contemporary dance.

It is based at the Fonderia, a fascinating example of industrial heritage that has been restored and transformed into a centre dedicated to artistic creation.
Here, every day, dancers, choreographers and artists from all over the world work on creating new performances and projects, making Reggio Emilia an international hub for contemporary dance.

In addition to the company’s activities, the Foundation promotes artist residencies, training programmes, workshops, events and collaborations with Italian and international cultural institutions.
It is a place where research, experimentation and dialogue between the arts give rise to a vibrant cultural scene open to the city and the public.

Over the years, Aterballetto has brought the name of Reggio Emilia to the stages of the most important international theatres and festivals, helping to promote the excellence of Italian dance around the world.
The company’s productions, created by some of the most influential choreographers on the contemporary scene, stand out for their artistic quality, innovation and ability to connect with audiences from all cultural backgrounds.

In 2022, the Foundation received a major accolade, becoming Italy’s first National Choreographic Centre.
This achievement confirms Reggio Emilia’s role as one of Europe’s leading centres for contemporary dance.

For visitors to the city, the Fondazione Nazionale della Danza / Aterballetto offers an opportunity to discover a unique and contemporary side of Reggio Emilia.
Attending a performance, taking part in an open rehearsal or an event, or visiting the Fonderia means experiencing a place where creativity, research and industrial heritage come together, creating a unique cultural experience.
