"Ruggero Ruggeri" Municipal Theatre
In the heart of Guastalla, the "Ruggero Ruggeri" Municipal Theatre recounts over three centuries of theatrical history. The idea of a theatre in the city dates back to 1670, when Ferdinando Gonzaga, Duke of Guastalla, wanted to lay the foundations for a building dedicated to culture and entertainment.
The works officially began in 1671, designed by the architect Antonio Vasconi on the occasion of the wedding of Ferdinando Carlo to Anna Isabella, daughter of the Duke of Guastalla, by order of Duke Ferrante III.
In the following centuries, the theatre experienced vicissitudes linked to fires and deterioration: already by the end of the eighteenth century, the building was unsafe, and it was only in 1813 that the architect Paglia launched restoration works, which culminated in the inauguration of 1814 during the Santa Caterina Fair.
Despite subsequent restorations, the structure still preserves today its original facade and its characteristic U-shaped plan, testifying to a centuries-old architectural tradition.
During the nineteenth century, the theatretook on its current layout, with three tiers of boxes and a gallery, becoming a true point of reference for local cultural life.
In the 1980s, it was carefully restored, returning a welcoming space to the community - one of the most appreciated in the Emilia-Romagna Region and one of the ten oldest theaters in Italy still in operation.
The theatre is named today after Ruggero Ruggeri (1871-1953), a great actor whose connection with Guastalla was profound: his mother was originally from the city, and Ruggeri himself often spent his summers in these lands.
Several memorable performances on the local stage earned him honorary citizenship in 1926 and the dedication of the theatre in his name.
Today, the Teatro Ruggero Ruggeri mainly hosts prose plays, with a 400-seat hall, offering spectators an immersive experience combining history, art, and theatrical culture.
