In the heart of Brescello, Piazza Giacomo Matteotti is the town’s iconic central square: a vibrant and charming setting, a lively gathering place for the local community, and the perfect starting point to immerse oneself in the history, art, and atmosphere of this characteristic village in the Bassa Reggiana.
On the northern side stands the Santa Maria Nascente Parish Church, an elegant 19th-century building housing an important artistic heritage.
Inside, visitors can admire works by Carlo Zatti, Antonio Gualdi, and Lelio Orsi, reflecting Brescello’s rich cultural and artistic tradition.
The square also tells the story of the town through an intriguing dialogue between past and present.
Here stood the ancient statue of Hercules the Benefactor (Ercole Benefattore), dedicated to Ercole I d’Este and sculpted by Jacopo Sansovino in 1553.
The original is now preserved in the Antiquarium museum, whilst the square honours its historic presence.
What makes Piazza Matteotti truly iconic are the famous contemporary statues of Don Camillo and Peppone, created in 2001 by sculptor Andrea Zangani.
Don Camillo stands on the church forecourt, while Peppone is positioned opposite the Town Hall - mirroring the timeless dynamic of the two beloved characters created by Giovannino Guareschi and set right here in Brescello.
A stroll through the square thus brings together art, history, and cinema in just a few steps, offering a discovery of one of Brescello’s most iconic landmarks and the ideal starting point for exploring the world of Don Camillo and Peppone.
