In the heart of Reggio Emilia’s historic centre, between Piazza della Vittoria and the Public Gardens, stands the War Memorial, one of the city’s most significant monumental works. Inaugurated on 30 October 1927, it reflects the historical and cultural atmosphere of the 1920s and today offers visitors an opportunity to explore an important piece of Reggio Emilia’s artistic and historical heritage.
Designed by Alberto Bazzoni (1889–1973), a sculptor from Parma who won the competition held for its creation, the monument is made of granite and features imposing dimensions: its base measures approximately 16 metres, while the structure reaches a height of 15 metres.
The monument is adorned on its two main sides with two large bronze sculptures depicting an infantryman and the Winged Victory.
The upper section features elegant bas-reliefs with symbolic scenes, including the Three Fates, a dying soldier supported by a female figure, scenes of rural work and representations of soldiers in battle.
Like many war memorials built in Italy during the same period, the monument was created within the celebratory context of the 1920s and reflects the political climate of that time.
Today, beyond its historical significance, it stands as an important example of 20th-century monumental art and a place of remembrance along any visit to Reggio Emilia.
