At the heart of the history of the local Jewish community lies the Jewish Cemetery of Scandiano, a rectangular burial ground enclosed by a wall approximately two metres high.
The entrance is marked by an iron gate flanked by a marble plaque inscribed with the words “Cimitero israelitico”, a testament to the long-standing presence of the Jewish community in Scandiano.
The current boundary wall dates from 1915, having replaced the previous hedge enclosure, thanks to funding from the Opera Pia Israelitica and private donations.
The earliest documented records of the cemetery date back to 1547, when Count Giulio Boiardo granted Vitale di Leone, a Jewish resident, a plot of land for burial, marking a significant milestone in the history of the local community.
The site underwent a major restoration in the spring of 1987, funded by Nobel Laureate Rita Levi Montalcini and the Municipality of Scandiano, and was inaugurated in 1992.
Today, the cemetery is not only a place of remembrance and devotion, but also a valuable stop for those wishing to learn more about the history and traditions of the town’s Jewish community.
