Santi Francesco di Paola e Maria Porziola Parish Church
Bagnolo in Piano
In the heart of Bagnolo in Piano, the Parish Church of Saints Francis of Paola and Mary Porziola stands as an elegant example of Renaissance religious architecture, commissioned by Count Alfonso Gonzaga.
The foundation stone was laid on 1 August 1588 by the Bishop of Reggio, Monsignor Giulio Masetti, marking the start of a building destined to become a spiritual and artistic landmark for the community.
The church was completed quickly, whilst the adjoining convent was not built until after the mid-17th century. The Minims resided there until 1768, the year of their transfer to Modena.
The façade is distinguished by its harmony and simplicity, punctuated by slender pilasters and crowned by small arches that accentuate its Renaissance elegance.
Above the arched portal stands a large rose window, a symbol of light and spirituality.
The interior, oriented liturgically, houses precious works of art and a refined wooden choir, a testament to the devotion and artistic taste of the era.
