Santa Maria Assunta Church
Castellarano
In the heart of the ancient village of Castellarano stands the Santa Maria Assunta Church, the successor to a parish church of Lombard origin, of which valuable traces remain: four columns with capitals, two corbels and sections of wall visible beneath the present-day floor.
These fragments tell a story dating back more than a thousand years, when the local community was already gathering in prayer at this sacred site.
The portal with its lunette, added after the year 1000, bears witness to the layers of history that have shaped the church.
The present building, with a Latin cross plan featuring side chapels and a dome, houses works of art of great value: 17th-century oil paintings that adorn the high altar and the chapels, evoking centuries of faith and devotion.
Among the most cherished treasures is the precious organ built by Lorenzo Pellegrini in 1666, restored to its original splendour in 1997 thanks to the community’s efforts.
