San Genesio Oratory
Fabbrico
Just outside the historic centre, nestled in a peaceful setting, stands the Oratory of San Genesio, a small but exquisite 18th-century building that was once the heart of popular devotion in Fabrica.
The simple, harmonious façade, punctuated by pilasters and a relief portal, is lightened by a trapezoidal window that illuminates the single-nave interior.
On the left-hand side, one can make out the small sacristy and a raised architectural feature that served as a small bell tower.
Inside, pilasters divide the space into three symmetrical sections, creating an elegant rhythm that leads towards the apse.
The walls feature trompe-l’œil painted decorations, floral garlands and a faux frescoed altar framing the polychrome wooden statue of Saint Genesius, set in the centre of a niche.
Also of great artistic interest is the black-backed scagliola altar frontal, decorated with an inlaid frieze and a central medallion depicting St Peter in a landscape.
Above the altar table stands an 18th-century wooden tabernacle with floral motifs, whilst the walls feature funerary plaques and terracotta and stone panels.
Today, the oratory, which is privately owned, opens its doors for worship only once a year: on 25 August, the feast of Saint Genesius, when the community gathers for the traditional Eucharistic celebration.
