Guardians of Castellarano’s history

The Clock Tower of Castellarano stands majestically in the historic center, serving as a witness to centuries of history and a time when monitoring the surrounding territory was vital. Originally built in the Middle Ages, the tower was charged with overseeing the passage of people and goods along the bed of the Secchia River, which lapped the ancient Fortress of Castellarano.

At the foot of the tower passed pilgrims bound for Rom, embarked on uncertain yet intensely spiritual journeys, as well as merchants traveling from Tuscany to Ferrara with all manner of goods. Furthermore, the tower enabled the surveillance of an activity that seems curious today: river navigation. The Secchia, frequently navigable, accommodated barge-like vessels used to transport timber and other materials, as regulated by the Municipality of Modena as early as the beginning of the 14th century to protect bridges and trade routes. A ferry system also connected Castellarano to San Michele (then under the village’s jurisdiction), testifying to a vibrant and organized river traffic. The importance of this activity is still reflected today in the name of Via Barcaroli, likely once home to the families involved in river transport.

By the end of the 17th century, the Clock Tower housed prisons and a keeper's room on the ground floor. Its most distinctive feature is the clock itself, which features single-hand dials facing all four cardinal points. The original mechanism, dating back to the late 1600s, remains in full working order, operated by a weight-driven system that bears witness to the ingenuity of the era’s craftsmen.

Today, the tower stands not only as an emblem of the town, but also as a monument to the economic, religious, and social life of Castellarano, set against the evocative backdrop of the Aia del Mandorlo, a historic gathering place of encounters and trade.
