Historical notes
Its geographical position at the confluence of the Campora and Crostolo streams has historically favoured human settlements. The territory boasts a significant historical, cultural, landscape and environmental heritage, and can be visited through several routes.
The origins of Vezzano sul Crostolo date back to the Early Middle Ages, and the Romans built numerous "domus" (country houses).
In the Middle Ages it was an important point of defence and control of the communication routes from and to the Apennines. It was annexed to the Este Duchy in 1420.
Today’s municipality was established, by decree of Luigi Carlo Farini, January 1, 1860; "sul Crostolo" was added to the initial name of "Vezzano" in 1862.
As well as being an important communication junction, in the past Vezzano sul Crostolo was also characterized by the presence of large gypsum sites; most of the local population was involved in its extraction and processing.
Several house-towers dating back to the XV century can still be seen in the town centre and in the surrounding hamlets.
There are also traces of medieval history and the Canossa family in Montalto, Paderna and Casola Canossa; an episode of recent history is commemorated every year at La Vecchia: the Bettola massacre perpetrated in 1944 by the Nazi-Fascists.
Not to be missed
The Ecopark, a public area extending over 55 hectares, has specimens of native fauna and contains a wide variety of ecosystems, so as to be one of the most densely populated areas with wild animals in the province of Reggio Emilia. It is possible to arrange snacks and lunches for individuals, schools and organized groups.
Vezzano sul Crostolo is also a stage along the “Matildic Route of the Holy Face”, the historical route of tourist-cultural interest as well as a pilgrimage route.
The stage from Vezzano sul Crostolo to Canossa and the variant to Montalto starts from the Ecopark parking.
