Historical origins
The Ars Canusina was born as an artistic artisanship which was typical of the province of Reggio Emilia around the year 1930, in the laboratories of the Colony-School “Antonio Marro”, which was an assistance and education centre for disabled children in school age. The characteristic iconographic patterns were reduced to a graphic repertory of professor Maria Bertolani Del Rio with the co-operation of expertsof applied arts.

The repertory of the decoration patterns of the Ars Canusina is gathered in an album printed in 1935 by Cesare Ratta (anastatic re-printing Age-Municipality of Casina, Reggio Emilia 1992) built through the reduction at the ornament drawing of the friezes traced in Matilde’s monuments existing in the province by the hand of professor Giuseppe Baroni.

Typical Production

The main places which, at that time, were thought to be particularly linked to “Matilde’s” art are distributed on the territory as follows:
Canossa with reference to a capital and the baptisimal font coming from the destroyed temple of St. Apollonio; Carpineti for its rich decorative elements coming from the churches of St. Andrew and St. Vitale; San Polo d’Enza for the baptisimal font coming from the ancient Matilde’s parish which was discovered only during the last ten years exactly under the current church; Quattro Castella for the lunette and the friezes of the parish church; Marola where, in the restored abbey, capitals and friezes of the ancient Matilde’s church are still present; Beleo for the Oratory; Paullo di Casina for the friezes garnishing the beautiful parish church; Toano for the capitals and the friezes of the S.Maria in Castello parish; Castellarano for the lunette and the capitals of the S. Maria church; Guastalla for the decorative elementsof the already restored parish.
