Historical notes
Built in the 16th century by the Pratonieri family and designed probably by Bartolomeo Spani (architect and sculptor), the palace may originally had have its main entrance on Via Fornaciari.
The ownership of the building passed to the Conti Vezzani until Cassa di Risparmio bank of Reggio Emilia purchased it in 1882 to house its headquarters. In the early 1900s the interior of the building was completely renovated. The designers were joined by an artistic commission chaired by the painter Gaetano Chierici. The work, delayed due to the WWI ended in 1916 when the official opening took finally place.
From 1916 to 2006 the palace was the headquarter of the Savings Bank. The building then, damaged by seismic events that followed one another over the years, remained unused. In 2016, 100 years after the date of the previous big renovation, UniCredit decided to start new restoration works, bringing the palace back to its former glory.
