Within its boundaries, the Marmirolo Oasis encompasses a variety of habitats that make it a small outdoor classroom for studying the natural features of the local area.
The site covers approximately 10 hectares and provides a resting, nesting and breeding area for a large number of bird species.
The pond is the defining feature of the Oasis, thanks to the abundant and easily observable presence of aquatic plants and birds.
The water body was created as a result of clay extraction for the production of bricks and roof tiles. It subsequently filled naturally with rainwater, transforming the site into a wetland habitat ideally suited to the spontaneous colonisation of a variety of animal and plant species typical of lowland wetlands.

Discover the Oasis and the wetlands east of Reggio Emilia by following the dedicated cycling route, Biking to the Marmirolo Oasis.

The Grey Heron is present throughout the year, while in spring and summer visitors may also spot Black-crowned Night Herons and Little Bitterns.
Among the waterfowl that frequent the pond, the most regular species are Mallard, Eurasian Teal and Garganey.
Little Grebe occasionally stops here during migration. Common Moorhen is present year-round, while Common Coot is particularly frequent in autumn and winter.
The most frequently observed birds of prey are Eurasian Sparrowhawk and Common Buzzard, while Osprey visits the Oasis during migration.
Common Snipe and Common Sandpiper are among the easiest species to spot.
Common Kingfisher and White Wagtail are resident species.
The surrounding habitat, consisting of groups of trees and shrubs, regularly hosts Swallows, Great Tits, White Wagtails, Long-tailed Tits, Chaffinches, European Greenfinches, European Serins, European Goldfinches, Eurasian Jays, Eurasian Magpies, Carrion Crows, Tawny Owls, Little Owls, Collared Doves, Green Woodpeckers, Great Spotted Woodpeckers and Common Pheasants.

The Oasis is managed by the WWF and LIPU associations, which ensure public access and provide expert staff to guide visitors and school groups.
