Astronomical Observatory

Nestled amongst the lush green rolling hills of Scandiano, the Lazzaro Spallanzani Astronomical Observatory is the ideal place to embark on a thrilling journey through science, nature and the stars.
Opened in 1995 and run by the Scandiano Association of Astronomical Physics (A.S.F.A.), it is one of the main centres for the popularisation of astronomy in the Reggio Emilia area.

The observatory covers an area of over 3,000 square metres, at 145 metres above sea level, in a privileged location offering a splendid view of the Emilian plain.
The entire complex comprises an operational centre, three astronomical domes equipped with telescopes of varying magnitudes, a solar tower for observing the Sun, a picturesque stone amphitheatre dedicated to educational activities, and a unique sundial inspired by the ancient observatory at Stonehenge.

During evenings when the observatory is open to the public, visitors of all ages can observe planets, nebulae, galaxies and constellations, accompanied by the association’s amateur astronomers, who, with expertise and passion, guide visitors on a journey of discovery into the secrets of the sky.
