Less Than
by Robert Morris
Timetable
At present, the sculpture can only be viewed on days when the Small Cloister is open, during events and exhibitions.
In the evocative Small Cloister of the Chiostri di San Domenico - one of the most intimate and atmospheric corners of Reggio Emilia - you will find Less Than, the permanent installation by American artist Robert Morris, created in 2005 specifically for this space filled with memory and silence.
Set within an atmosphere of profound stillness, the sculpture engages in dialogue with the cloister’s historic architecture - once known as the “Cloister of the Dead”- creating a powerful, intimate, and deeply symbolic experience.
Less Than is a monumental bronze sculpture (220 × 125 × 75 cm), depicting a powerful yet headless body bent under the weight of an amphora.
The image is rich in meaning: the amphora is at once a funerary urn and a source of life, holding a fragile balance between ending and renewal.
Inside the amphora lies Hope, the central element of Morris’s allegory, inviting visitors to reflect on the origins of evil, the human condition, and the role of art as a tool for questioning and awareness.
Originally, the work was accompanied by industrial sounds played daily at dusk, intended to introduce the noises of everyday life into the cloister’s silence.
Today, only the solemn presence of the sculpture remains, still carrying a strong evocative power, amplified by the quiet and sacred nature of its setting.
