Located in the historic heart of Correggio, the “Il Correggio” Museum is housed in the elegant rooms on the main floor of the Palazzo dei Principi.
This extraordinary space preserves a rich artistic and cultural heritage, featuring works from local churches, private collections, and public holdings of the Da Correggio family.
As they stroll through the museum’s galleries, visitors can admire masterpieces by great masters such as Andrea Mantegna, Girolamo Donnini, Mattia Preti, Baldassare Aloisi (known as “il Galanino”), Francesco Madonnina, and many others.
The museum also features archaeological finds from the Correggio area and coins from the city’s historic mint, offering a unique glimpse into local history and culture.
Main galleries
First floor
- Archaeological Collections and Numismatic Gallery
A journey through Pre-Roman, Roman, Medieval, and Renaissance artefacts, with a special focus on the excavations carried out in the area of Canolo Castle. The gallery also displays coins from the 16th and 17th centuries, as well as medals connected to the city’s history.
- Mantegna Room (Sala Magna or Sala del Camino)
Distinguished by its magnificent coffered ceiling and impressive fireplace, this grand hall houses iconic works such as The Redeemer (1493) by Andrea Mantegna and the Madonna of the Rosary by Francesco Madonnina, alongside remarkable 15th-century sacred sculptures.
- Tapestry Room
Admire an exceptional 16th-century tapestry ensemble, comprising nine large Flemish tapestries and two matching decorative hangings, together with portraits of the Da Correggio family, sacred artworks, and a historic map of the city dating to around 1630.
- 17th- and 18th-Century Gallery
An engaging journey through Baroque and Neoclassical art, showcasing works that reflect the artistic developments of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries.
- Correggio Room
Dedicated to Antonio Allegri, known as Correggio, this gallery features engravings and works associated with the celebrated master, presented on a rotating basis.
