In the heart of Brescello, within the San Benedetto Cultural Centre, the “Albino Umiltà” Archaeological Museum offers a fascinating journey of discovery through Brixellum, the ancient Roman settlement that preceded the modern town.
Founded by the Cenomani Gauls and developed during the Roman era, Brixellum played a strategic role along the River Po, the hub of trade between Emilia and Lombardy.
The museum is spread over two floors: on the ground floor, visitors can admire the Roman necropolis, some original stelae and a replica of the Monument to the Concordi, as well as a reconstruction of a typical Roman domus with mosaic floors, allowing visitors to immerse themselves in the daily life of the ancient inhabitants.
On the first floor, the section dedicated to the local area tells the story of the Roman town of Brixellum through archaeological finds, information panels, amphorae and objects unearthed in recent excavations.
Thanks to screens and multimedia displays, visitors can follow the access roads to the city, the land reclamation and drainage works, commercial trade, urban planning and domestic spaces, thus coming into direct contact with the site’s millennia-old history.
Among the most important finds are two headless statues, one depicting a man in a toga from the Museum of Parma and the other probably a river trader, bearing witness to the wealth and importance of Brixellum in Roman times.
A visit to the “Albino Umiltà” Archaeological Museum is an ideal experience for history enthusiasts, families, school groups and curious tourists, offering a comprehensive and immersive journey to discover the historical and cultural roots of the Parma lowlands.
