Known locally as the "Children's Fountain" for the three cherubs adorning its base, the Abbot Ferrari Bonini Fountain is one of the most elegant monuments in Reggio Emilia's historic centre.
The fountain was inaugurated in 1885 to mark the completion of the city's new water supply system, thanks to the generosity of Senator Ulderico Levi.
It was dedicated to Abbot Giuseppe Ferrari Bonini, an 18th-century educator and philanthropist who devoted his life to caring for and educating underprivileged children.
The sculptural decoration was created by Reggio Emilia artist Ilario Bedotti, assisted by his pupil Guglielmo Fornaciari, while the architectural design was entrusted to engineer Domenico Lanza.
Rising from the centre of the circular basin is a pedestal decorated with plant motifs, supporting a shell-shaped bowl crowned by a statue of Triton, the sea god of Greek mythology.
Three charming cherubs surround the pedestal, originally representing Fame, History, and Gratitude.
Their presence has made the fountain one of the city's most beloved landmarks.
After remaining dry for many years, the fountain underwent a major restoration in 2018.
The hydraulic and lighting systems were completely renewed, allowing the water to flow once again and restoring this historic monument to its original elegance.
