Majestic and luminous, the Church of San Pietro stands out with its elegant dome, designed by Paolo Massoni of Reggio Emilia and built between 1625 and 1629, as one of the finest examples of Emilian Baroque.

The church’s profile was completed in the 18th century with the addition of the bell tower (1765) and the neoclassical façade by Pietro Armani (1782), which lends the building a sense of balance in form and proportion.
The harmonious stepped churchyard, built in 1816 and remodelled in the 20th century, provides a solemn entrance to the church.

Architecture and interior design

The interior, with a Latin cross plan and a single nave, is striking for its decorative richness: exquisite Baroque choir stalls in marble and wood frame a space that combines simplicity and splendour.
The side chapels house masterpieces of 17th-century Emilian painting, authentic treasures of art and devotion, and offer a pictorial itinerary of great value:

  • the Holy Trinity by Alessandro Tiarini, who also painted the Martyrdom of Saint Barbara (1625) in the third chapel;

  • Saint Michael the Archangel by Pietro Desani (1627);

  • The Martyrdom of Saints Placido and Bibbiana by Paolo Emilio Besenzi (1648);

  • St Peter and St Gioconda by Giovanni Andrea Donducci, known as Mastelletta (1639);

  • The Eternal One in Glory with Angels by Camillo Gavassetti (c. 1630).
