Santo Stefano Church
Poviglio
In the heart of Poviglio stands the Santo Stefano Church, a silent witness to centuries of faith and local history.
Its origins probably date back to the 11th century, when the church was closely linked to the castle: the main entrance was reserved for the feudal lord, whilst the faithful entered through the side.
Over the centuries, the church has undergone numerous alterations, the most significant of which took place in the 19th century, giving the façade a bright and harmonious appearance.
The façade is punctuated by pilasters and features a raised central section, topped by an elegant triangular pediment, flanked by arched pediments with pyramidal acroteria.
Inside, the three-nave building, marked by rows of pilasters, houses two exquisite altar frontals in polychrome plaster and an octagonal baptismal font in Verona marble, decorated with rosettes and shields.
The bell tower, dating back to the 15th century, houses a precious medieval fresco on the first floor depicting the Madonna with Angels, a symbol of the community’s long religious tradition.
