Santi Quirino and Michele Basilica

The spiritual heart of the city, the Santi Quirino and Michele Basilica stands as one of the most significant examples of Correggio’s religious and artistic history.
The present building, begun in 1516 and consecrated in 1587, is the second church dedicated to the patron saint, following the older one, which dates back to the 12th century.
The façade, completed in 1782, took on its current classical appearance in 1964, based on a design by the architect Carmela Adani.

With a basilica-style layout featuring three naves and twelve side chapels, the church has a raised chancel housing a large crypt, restored by Adani herself.
The interior is adorned with works of art of extraordinary value: a ‘Vision of Saint Martin’ by Domenico Fetti, frescoes and sculptures by local artists such as Girolamo Donnini, Luigi Asioli, Emilio Meulli, Enrico Bertolini and Carmela Adani.
Polychrome wooden altarpieces, stuccoes and altar frontals in polychrome scagliola complete a setting of refined beauty.

The Sacristy houses an important liturgical treasure, including a rare ivory casket from the Embriachi workshop (15th century), now kept at the Civic Museum.
Next to the Basilica stands the civic tower, the last visible remnant of the ancient castle of Correggio.
