Just beyond the 16th-century city walls, the Church of the Madonna della Rosa has been a place of deep Marian devotion for centuries.
It stands on the site where, as early as 1440, there was a chapel commissioned by Giberto da Correggio and dedicated to Saint Ursula.
Destroyed during the wars of the 16th century, the chapel was rebuilt and consecrated to the Blessed Virgin of the Rose in 1600, following the miraculous events attributed to the image of the Madonna.
The present church, built as a votive temple by Prince Siro di Camillo da Correggio in 1625, was consecrated in 1626.
For centuries it was a destination for pilgrimages and a symbol of the town’s protection: in 1656, Correggio made a solemn vow to the Virgin and to San Quirino, which was renewed until the 19th century.
Restored and reopened for worship in 2000, today the church is managed by the parish of San Prospero and continues to be a centre of prayer during Marian feasts and throughout the month of May.
