Beata Vergine della Fossetta Sanctuary

In Novellara, north of the historic Rocca, stands the Beata Vergine della Fossetta Sanctuary, a place of faith and pilgrimage for over four centuries.
Its origins date back to 1564, when Count Alfonso I Gonzaga had a small chapel built to house an image of the Blessed Virgin painted by Lelio Orsi, which quickly became a pilgrimage destination due to its reputation for miracles.
In the 17th century, the small chapel was extended with a portico, and in 1654, based on a design by the architect Giovanni Francesco Negri, a new church in the shape of a Greek cross was built, featuring a central dome supported by four pillars.
Over time, the building has undergone restoration work and the façade has been raised; in 1821, the clock was added, whilst the bell tower stands out for its three-light window, set slightly apart from the main building.
The elegant façade, punctuated by pilasters, niches and statues of saints, welcomes visitors on a journey of contemplation and devotion.
Inside, behind the high altar, stands the image of the Blessed Virgin of the Dimple, a masterpiece by Lelio Orsi, which has been the object of prayer and veneration for centuries.
The history of the sanctuary is studded with miracles, graces and pilgrimages, making it an essential spiritual destination for the community of Novellara.
