The historical symbol of Piazza Garibaldi

Dominating the view of Piazza Garibaldi and standing as the town's most recognizable symbol is the Torrazzo of Bagnolo, a civic tower with an unconventional architectural silhouette that has told the story and transformations of the community for centuries.

The Torrazzo features a Baroque-style bell chamber raised atop a massive raw-brick structure, the last and imposing testament to the ancient Rocca di Bagnolo (Bagnolo Fortress). In memory of this former fortified complex, the modern arcades between the town hall and the post office are named Galleria della Rocca, keeping the bond with the past alive.

The earliest records of a fortified stronghold in Bagnolo date back to 946. The ancient structure was destroyed in 1304, but in 1354, with the rise of the Gonzaga family, Count Feltrino Gonzaga ordered the construction of a new, powerful castle.
The project weighed entirely on the municipality's finances and repurposed materials from local towers, churches, and monasteries, converting sacred and civic buildings into defensive structures.

A dramatic event forever marked the fortress's history: on July 27, 1702, during the War of the Spanish Succession, French troops under the Duke of Vendôme sacked the village, burned and destroyed the fortress, and scattered the valuable documents of the Community Archives.
Today, only the ancient keep remains from that vast complex: the Torrazzo, which has become the emblem of the town.

In the second half of the 19th century, the tower was restored and equipped with a bell and a public clock. The original clock mechanism is now preserved at the Town Hall, in the Municipal Executive Board Room (Sala della Giunta), as a precious piece of civic heritage.

On October 15, 1996, a strong earthquake struck Bagnolo, causing severe damage to the Torrazzo, which has since been subject to ongoing consolidation and restoration efforts.
Over the centuries, the tower has watched the town grow and transform, also standing as a silent witness to one of the most tragic events in local history: the massacre of February 14, 1945, when ten citizens of Bagnolo were executed directly in front of it.
