Location

Correggio is the most important town after the administrative centre, Reggio Emilia, and is located about 20 km north of it.

Historical notes

Already inhabited in Roman and Longobard times, since the XI century the town has been a feudal land of the family from which it takes its name: the Da Correggio family, which competed with the Visconti and Este families between the XIV and XV centuries, also becoming lords of Parma for a short time. The Da Correggio family, after the original feudal grant, got Correggio recognized as a county in 1452 and a town in 1599. Their court attracted poets and intellectuals, such as Ariosto, the Bembo, Aretino, all guests of the counts. The Court of Correggio was very well-known in the Po River Valley at that time and reached its peak with Nicolò Da Correggio (1450-1508), Veronica Gambara (1485-1550) and the painter Antonio Allegri (1489/1494-1534), called "The Correggio". In 1616 Correggio was elevated to the rank of principality. In 1630 Siro, Prince of Correggio, lost his feudal rights to tht, then seized by the Duke of Modena.

Important characters born in Correggio include, among others, the painter Antonio Allegri, the musician Bonifazio Asioli (1769-1832), the sculptress Carmela Adani (1899-1965), the marathon runner Dorando Pietri (1885-1942), the writer Pier Vittorio Tondelli (1955-1991), the flautist Andrea Griminelli (December 13, 1959) and the rocker Luciano Ligabue (March 13, 1960).

Historical notes

The façade, created at the end of the 18th century, assumed its present appearance (in Classical style) about 1964 on the design of Carmela Adani. The interior is of considerable architectural interest, having three naves with twelve side chapels and three at the heads of the naves. The presbytery is raised to make room for a large underlying crypt, restored by Adani. The furnishings are notable, in terms of the works of art as well as the altars, vestments, and decorations. One can admire a painting by Domenico Fetti (St. Martin‘s Vision, third altar on the right), and paintings, frescoes, and sculptures by local artists (Girolamo Donnini, Luigi Asioli, Emilio Meulli, Enrico Bertolini, Carmela Adani, etc.). Wooden altar-pieces, rich stuccowork, altar-frontals in polychromatic scagliola, works in terracotta, wax modelling, and papier-maché complete the furnishings of the Basilica. The sacristy holds antique furniture and, in particular, a fine treasury including an exquisite jewel-case made by the workshop of the Embriachi family (15th century, on deposit at the Civic Museum of Correggio). The lid of the wooden case is decorated with bone inlays and three sides are decorated with a series of figurative pilasters also in bone.

Historical notes

Built in 1666 in Borrominian style by the Confraternity of the Holy Trinity, the church today is the site (with adjacent convent) of the Capuchin Clarisse nuns. The oval-shaped interior is rich in statues and Baroque decorations. In 1740, the goods and the church of the Confraternity were expropriated by the Sisters of Santa Chiara who resided in the adjacent convent. The building was restored in the latter part of the 20th century. The façade, very simple and unadorned, has a pleasant curved face and tympanum crowning. The interior has a central plan with trabeation supported by paired columns and ionic capitals decorated with festoons. The upper part has niches with statues of Saints Augustine, Jerome, Gregory, and Ambrose. The church has a small, deep apse with barrel vaulted ceiling and two side altars. Behind the high altar, separated by a grate, the convent part begins. The most important restoration works were carried out in 1764, including all the stuccowork decoration after the 1996 earthquake.

Historical notes

The origin of this church, one of the oldest buildings in the Borgovecchio district, is linked to the activity of the Confraternity of the Verberati of Santa Maria della Misericordia, already present in Correggio in 1316. The current configuration of the building is the result of successive works: from the mid-XVIII century, the front facing onto Via Santa Maria with arched portico on columns and doric pilaster strips; from the mid-XIX century the side on Via Borgovecchio in neo-Gothic style with pilaster strips and oval two-light mullioned windows. In the interior, very simple and spare, were important paintings by Antonio Allegri (the Correggio). The suppression of the confraternity dates back to 1782. The church became a storage and market for firewood until 1796, when it was reopened for worship.

After the suppression of the confraternity, the building was almost entirely abandoned until the recent restoration works. The façade of the church, facing onto Via Santa Maria, is preceded by a porticoed part with four pilasters and round arches in exposed brick. Under the portico, with cross-vault, the entrance is preceded by a polychromatic wooden portal dating back to the XVIII century. The right side of the church is marked by pilaster strips and oval two-light mullioned windows. The small bell tower that can be seen on the side was built in 1833.
The church is no longer used for worship and is not accessible to visitors.

Historical notes

The exterior of the church has a number of elements of considerable artistic interest, especially the two-tier façade with columns and niches.
The church’s bell tower stands to the west, tiled with “cotto” tiles. Its pinnacle was partially damaged in an earthquake in 1832.
As confirmed by a map of the town painted in oils in 1630, the church’s architectural appearance at that date was much the same as it is today.
This important spiritual centre, originally dedicated to St Domenico was re-dedicated to San Giuseppe Calasanzio (St Joseph Calasanctius) in 1783, following the abolition of the convent and the opening of the Piarist boarding school.
The façade has a two-tier design with columns and niches, surmounted by a large triangular pediment with two spiral pillars recalling renaissance compositional styles.
The floor plan is typical of the late mannerist style, consisting of a single nave with five chapels for each of the two sides, a short transept and a deep apse.
The interior is ornamented by altars in stucco, marble and fine plaster, preserving historical memories and a variety of interesting paintings ranging in date from the 15th to the 19th century.
The Church’s structure was further damaged as a result of the 1996 earthquake.
The original church was built in the 11th century and substantially modified in the 16th and 17th centuries. Its architectural style is Tuscan, adopting a basilica plan with a nave and two aisles. The inlaid wooden choir stalls behind the main altar are the work of the Brindani cabinet makers of Montecchio Emilia.

Historical notes

While the façade is the result of twentieth-century restoration works, the interior still reveals an eighteenth-century layout, starting from the broad state staircase leading to first floor. The atrium, the staircase walls and the upper passage hold various memorial tablets, coats-of-arms of noble families of Correggio and of the Municipality, and samples of the materials and measurements used in the principality. Of particular interest is the bust of Giuseppe Garibaldi by Vincenzo Vela. The names of the most illustrious citizens of past centuries are also inscribed on walls of atrium.

Town Council hall and other adjacent rooms conserve nineteenth-century frescoes and decorations by local painters Luigi Asioli and Andrea Capretti (1821-1870). The vault of the central room, also frescoed by Capretti, shows a number of scenes of the town.
At the end of the corridor on the first floor, a clock is built into a painted architectural frame. The Palace, with undulating façade, is divided into two parts by Via del Correggio. The most interesting part is that on the left, which has two entrance doors under the porticoes. The part on the right leads to the former Church of the Confraternity of St. Joseph Patriarch, erected in 1503 for charity purposes, now the site of municipal offices.
Since December 2000, a permanent exhibit is set up in municipal rooms dedicated to local painter Giovanetti, currently showing fifteen works. The current structure is the result of various joinings of pre-existing buildings. The oldest part is the one at the left.
