Historical notes

Rio Saliceto is characterized by 18th and 19th-century artistic features, despite it having been already mentioned in documents dating back to the 10th century.

For centuries known as Villa di Correggio, Rio Saliceto only obtained administrative autonomy in 1860. Initially named Rio, from the name of the canal - today Tresinaro - which flows along the border with Carpi, it later became San Giorgio in Rio; the name of Rio Saliceto was made official in 1864 because of the marsh willows (salice in Italian) that grow in the area.

The area was partially reclaimed by the Romans. Some archaeological remains from that time have been found in the area: a tomb, of which a marble lion remains, kept in the courtyard of the Palazzo dei Principi in Correggio; a brick with a recess on the surface, making it easier to handle, was found in via Ca' de' Frati in 1969 during the digging of a well and is now kept in the Municipal Library; the remains of a lithostratum (floor mosaic) was found in the same area in 1912.

Not to be missed

Historical study

In a document signed in 772 A.D. by Lombardic King Desiderius, the area including the spot where the current town lies is described as being made up of "earth, blind alleys, and meadows", with very few inhabitants.
In 907 A.D., part of the same territory belonged to the Church of Reggio Emilia, later becoming the property of Boniface of Canossa, father of Matilda, Countess of Canossa, who gave the land back to the Church.
In 1093, the name of the town appeared for the first time in a papal bull signed by Antipope Gilbert. Between the 12th and 13th centuries, Rio was registered in the "Book of Hearth Fires" from the district of Reggio Emilia as having 20 families of independent farmers and 7 sharecroppers.

Rio was subject to the Da Correggio family, and the mint belonging to their principality was located in Villa Caprì, a locality in the territory of Rio. In 1635 the territory came under the rule of the Duke of Modena and Reggio Emilia, Francesco d'Este I.
In 1859, a plebiscite sanctioned an independent government for the town of Rio Saliceto, taking effect January 1, 1860. April 18, 1881, following the example set by Reggio Emilia and Novellara, the Workers' Mutual Aid Society was set up, with the objective of lending assistance to workers experiencing hardship.

A building was erected in 1913 in Piazza Carducci, next to the school buildings, to house the society. With the same objective, Alfredo Ansaloni founded the analogous Military Brotherhood Society while on leave in 1899. The first cooperative company was set up August 23, 1901.
Called "L'Enologica", it combined the sale and production of local wines with the goal of raising the importance of the area's special types of wines and increasing sales.

The rapid demographic and economic growth of Rio Saliceto in the past few decades has allowed the town to improve its municipal, social and educational services, in which various sports, cultural, and volunteer groups and associations are actively involved, contributing to complete the picture of a lively, hardworking community.

Historical notes

The modest chapel of “Sancti Georgii cum centum juges” (“of Saint George with one hundred fields” – tough presently numbering one hundred and twelve along the border of Mandrio di Correggio), first appeared in the list of estates under the church of Reggio Emilia compiled in 1070. The properties had belonged to the Marquis Boniface, father of Matilda, Countess of Canossa. The fact that a priest was appointed in 1238, suggests that a chapel or a church already existed in Rio Saliceto at that time. Since the original church had fallen into disrepair and could no longer cater for the growing local population, it was totally reconstructed on a design by the engineer from Correggio Raffaele Villa, and re-consecrated on 23April 1879.

The present church of San Giorgio Martire has a Latin cross layout with a semicircular apse. The interior is subdivided into one nave and two aisles by square pillars and contains a valuable scagliola ancon above the main altar. This provides the frame for the canvas of the Madonna with Infant Jesus and San Giovannino. The latter may be a copy of a painting attributed to Antoni Allegri, known as Correggio (1498-1534). The church also contains an important painting of the Madonna di Loreto, held up and crowned by angels with the imprisoned San Rocco, a late 17th-century copy of a painting by Guido Reni presently located in the Galleria Estense in Modena.
Due to the damage caused by an earthquake in October 1995, works have had to be carried to reinforce the roofing and restore the decorations. These were completed in 2000.
During excavation works near the church in the early 17th century, an imposing sarcophagus was found, probably of Roman origins. It consisted of a coffin with four lions and two urns at each end. Three of the four lions were destroyed to recover the lime, and the remaining one, bearing the epigraph “C. Fuficius Hilario”, was sent to the Palazzi dei Principi in Correggio where it is still held today.

The deed of partnership of the cooperative dates to 23 August 1901 and states that the purpose of the company was not only to produce and distribute the typical local wine but also to make it known and appreciated. Pier Giacinto Terracini, first mayor and remarkable administrator and town-planner, dedicated to this wine – stronger than any other in the district – a monument known as “il Bacco,” composed of a large cask surmounted by Noah. The monument was later destroyed during the Fascist period.
The cooperative’s enological vocation is further expressed by the building in via Garibaldi, which housed it until 1935, when the building was sold. Along the outer walls of the building hundreds of bottles of wine – alternating bottoms and mouths – were incorporated.
In occasion of the hundredth anniversary of its founding, a celebration was organized on 23 August 2001 which included the placement of a commemorative plaque on the façade of the palazzo depicting St. George, patron saint of Rio Saliceto.

Historical notes

The neoclassic Palazzo, designed by the architect Giuseppe Aimi of Correggio, presents a T-shape plan, with the central body characterized by a Doric tetrastyle pronaos in exposed brick on a base in fake smooth ashlar with small lunette apertures. Particularly elegant are the decorative elements in the terracotta frieze, including medallions that depict the eight founders of the Municipality (don Giovanni Battista Branchetti, Luigi Brunetti, Luigi Carbonieri, Fortunato Galantini, Luigi Nicolini, Sante Santachiara, Tomaso Terrachini, and Frumenzio Bernini) that were commissioned by the mayor, Pier Giacinto Terrachini, from his son Bruto.
The building was completely restored in 1983-84.
